Bosworth Field

The wars of the roses went on for a really long time and why they were not called civil wars is beyond me.  No matter. On this date in 1485 the future Henry VII – aka Henry Tudor – defeated Richard III — aka my kingdom for a horse— at the battle of Bosworth field, back in the days when battles lasted one day.  Richard might have won the day but he lost his recipe for jumbles and so gave up.

Ingredients

6oz butter

6oz caster sugar

1 egg

Grated rind of 1 lemon

8oz flour

 Instructions

Preheat the oven to 180°  C/350° F.

Beat together the butter and sugar until white and fluffy. Beat the egg well, then gradually add to the butter-sugar mix. Add the grated lemon rind and stir well. Add the flour a little at a time to form a stiff mixture.

Divide the mixture into small pieces and form then into an S shape. This is the most important step.

Place the jumbles on a greased baking tray. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
